Music Review
Praise Report Radio's current featured artist is Jim Black. Jim Black is actually Pastor Jim Black, co-pastor of Hope Community Covenant Church in Boynton Beach, Florida. We had a chance to ask pastor Jim a few questions about his music, his walk and his worship.
KPRR: How do you categorize your music style? Jim: My musical style was influenced by the "singer-songwriters" I grew up listening to. Jim Croce, James Taylor, Simon/Garfunkle, etc. In the Christian music world there is Keith Green, Rich Mullins, Larry Norman… So within that genre, I guess I write folk/rock/prayer songs.
KPRR: How has your walk with God been affected by worship through music?
Jim: The music I write and sing is really just a continuing conversation with God. Sometimes it’s "thanks" or an "argument" or "wondering"…but each song comes from a specific experience in my walk with God. Sometimes I write songs that are way ahead of where I am in my walk, then God spends the years after teaching me to live out what I write and sing. So GRACE is a big theme as well! Music always draws me closer to God, and He often bypasses my arguing mind and cuts right to the heart through music.
KPRR: What are your three (3) favorite songs on the album? Why?
Jim: This is like choosing which baby you love more! Sometime you have an "ugly" kid, but you love him/her just the same! I guess "I Can Remember (Underwear Song)’" is one because it’s part of my childhood…
"I Will Follow You" because I need to pray that prayer every day/all day…
"Til then…" for the same reason…
KPRR: How long have you been playing praise and worship music?
Jim: I started to play guitar in 1977, and started to write as soon as I knew 3 chords. I traveled in a band from ‘78- to ’81 – we would spend a week in each church playing concerts and supporting the ministries in each place – that is where I began to lead worship…
KPRR: How long have you been a pastor?
Jim: I joined a team of church planters in 1985 as a youth/music minister. There were 5 of us on that team in the arts – we were a "tent-making" staff for the pastors…From there I went to seminary – was called to Florida to start a new work…so I’ve been in ministry since ’79 – and a "pastor" since ’92.
KPRR: What kind of tips can you give young musicians interested in praise and worship?
Jim: Serve where you are…God will lead you in His timing and in His way!
KPRR: How do you want your music to touch people?
Jim: I hope that this music helps people to pray, question, seek, repent, and most of all, relax in God’s grace!
KPRR: How can people get a hold of your music?
Jim: My website : (to order CD’s / booking info) www.jimblacksongs.com
KPRR: Pastor Jim, thank you for taking time out for this interview. We know how busy you are with a church to run, songs to write, and a congregation to lead. We pray that God continues to bless your music and ministry. And all of God's people said...Amen. Add as favourites (70) | Quote this article on your site | Views: 3073 | Print | E-mail
